Creating a room that fits your personality can make your space more enjoyable but it’s not as easy as it looks. Here are 10 tips to make your space reflect your personal style.
1. Start With One Piece That Inspires Joy
Choosing one item that is really you, is meaningful to you and represents what you think is beautiful is a great place to start. It provides an anchor for all future design decisions. This item could be a piece of art, a unique decorative object or even the couch you have always dreamed of owning. Take note of the colors of this object and choose other items that have the same color such as pillows, rugs or other decorative objects. 2. Chose One Neutral Base Color
Selecting one base color is essential. This color will be the dominant color in terms of quantity. Often times this is the sofa, rug, or both. This neutral such a beige, gray, greige, white, black or taupe.
3. Limit Your Color Palette
I often see clients who want to introduce color choose too many different colors. Limiting the number of colors in one room - and for that matter the whole house - can bring a sense of cohesiveness. Remember you will have your base color which should be dominant, 2 accent colors (sometimes more but there are rules to this too), a metal, a wood, wall paint and flooring. That’s a lot of different elements to coordinate, so you can see why aiming for 2 accent colors is best. Accent colors can also be neutral, but can almost be any color.
4. Chose One Metal Accent
While mixed metals has been a trend, done wrong this can create a lot of visual clutter. Chose one metal color and sheen and sprinkle bits of it throughout the room.
5. Select One Wood Color
Having one uniting wood color in tables, shelving or other decor cuts down on a feeling of business in a room. Please note this wood color should be different but coordinating with your wood floor color if you have them.
6. Vary Textures & Patterns
Mixing smooth and textured fabrics brings visual as well as tactile interest to a room. Sprinkling in variations on patterns such as geometric in art and cushions also ties the look together.
7. Use Rugs to Tie The Room Together
A rug is a great way to tie the room together. It can feature hints of your inspiration colors or serve as your neutral base color.
8. Don’t Forget Lighting
Layering lighting creates a warm inviting feeling. Having a variety of light sources - overhead, table top and floor - creates variety and multi-functionality. Dimmers are also useful.
9. Design Around Purpose
Think about how you like to use the room. Do you do a lot of entertaining or is the room mainly for family time. Does the room have to serve a variety of purposes. Think of the purposes when choosing furnishings. Such as choosing an easy care fabric and durable sofa for a large family.
10. Have Fun
Quirky and unique items give a room personality. Be bold in finding decor second hand or vintage. Remember, go with what you love, a few key pieces is all you need.
